80 Feared Drowned on Bus in India
An overcrowded bus swerved off a bridge and plunged into a canal in Punjab state Monday, and at least 80 passengers were feared drowned, according to reports from the area.
The bus was carrying more than 100 passengers--many of them on the roof--when it smashed through the bridge railing and fell into the 25-foot-deep Bhakra canal.
The United News of India said 11 passengers traveling on the rooftop swam ashore. Only two bodies had been recovered by Monday night, the news agency said.
Army and navy divers were called to help recover bodies of people trapped inside the bus, a government spokesman said.
