Pilot Who Attacked Stark Has Not Been Punished, Iraqi Official Says
Iraqi Foreign Minister Tarik Aziz said Monday that the pilot of the Iraqi plane that attacked the U.S. frigate Stark in the Persian Gulf last month has not been punished.
“No,” Aziz replied without elaboration when asked at a news conference whether any kind of action has been taken against the flier.
Pressed to say whether this meant that the pilot had the right to carry out the missile attack, which resulted in the death of 37 American sailors, Aziz replied:
“No, no. Don’t draw wrong results from what I said. I said there were no sanctions taken against him. That’s it.”
Aziz has been holding talks with U.N. officials as part of a seven-member Arab League delegation seeking ways of ending the Iran-Iraq War.
