About 3.3 Million Viewers in L.A. Tuned In to Watch Lakers Win Title
The Lakers’ title-clinching victory over the Boston Celtics drew a Los Angeles Nielsen rating of 29.7 Sunday, a Channel 2 spokeswoman said Monday. That translates to more than 3.3 million viewers in the L.A. market.
The share was 62, meaning 62% of the people watching television at the time were watching the game. The rating means that the game was being watched in 29.7% of the 4.5 million television households in the market.
The L.A. rating for Game 6 of the 1985 NBA championship series, when the Lakers also beat the Celtics, was a 26.6. But Sunday’s 29.7 rating is not a Laker record. The record is a 31.4 for Game 7 of the 1984 finals, when the Celtics defeated the Lakers.
Other L.A. ratings during the 1987 series: Game 1, 20.7 with a 34 share; Game 2, 24.0, 38; Game 3, 21.7, 48; Game 4, 28.1, 43, and Game 5, 28.6, 46.
