Wayne Gretzky, who hinted that he might retire after helping lead the Edmonton Oilers to the Stanley Cup championship, has signed a five-year contract extension with the Oilers.

Gretzky, 26, an eight-time Most Valuable Player of the National Hockey League, signed to play with the Oilers until 1992.

Gretzky, who had 62 goals and 121 assists for 183 points this season to lead the league, would not reveal if the new contract would improve on his current $1-million salary.
