Postal Employees Find Medfly Larvae

U.S. Postal Service workers in Santa Ana have intercepted an illegal shipment of spoiled tropical fruit containing seven Mediterranean fruit fly larvae, the state Department of Food and Agriculture reported Thursday.

“This prevented a potential big Medfly infestation,” said Gera Curry, department information officer.

On June 12, postal workers at the Santa Ana general mail facility found a box containing fruit that had been mailed from Honolulu to Westminster in violation of a federal quarantine, Curry said. Department of Food and Agriculture laboratory technicians Thursday confirmed that the larvae found inside were Medflies, Curry said.
