A veterinarian at the Louisiana Downs race track in Bossier City, La., was suspended for allegedly accepting money from trainers to inject stimulants into thoroughbreds before they race, the Dallas Morning News reported.
Louisiana state police said a report by track stewards, who suspended Dr. Charles R. Butler, will be sent to the Louisiana Racing Commission.
The report claims that beginning in 1981, Butler accepted money from several trainers to inject Dilaudid and Numorphan into horses before races. The pain-killing drugs also act as stimulants in thoroughbreds.
Butler was granted a suspensory appeal, pending a commission hearing on July 16.
