OUT SPEAKING

Share

It was my pleasure to read Dan Sullivan’s “Are We Creating Mausoleums Filled With Starving Artists?” (May 24).

It is so rare that anyone speaks out on behalf of artists, much less mentions what these artists need just to survive.

We recognize the importance of institutions like the Music Center. But we cannot honestly revel in rhetoric about a “Cultural Boom” and pat ourselves on the back for having arrived artistically without nurturing those artists who are being presented in these institutions or those artists, particularly Los Angeles artists, who will provide the future works that will be showcased.

More conscious voices like Sullivan’s should speak out to educate the patrons of the city and the city’s funding organizations. We applaud Sullivan for his insight and for his bravery in speaking out.
