Hearings have been scheduled on Sen. Alan Cranston’s proposal to change the way California’s desert is used and protected. The legislation is expected to lead to a major confrontation, with environmental groups on one side and mining companies, off-road vehicle enthusiasts and some ranchers on the other. Public officials will testify at the first hearing on July 21 in Room 366 of the Dirksen Office Building on Capitol Hill. The public will be allowed to testify in the same room on July 23.
