The commission charged with restoring the Statue of Liberty has rejected plans for a hotel on neighboring Ellis Island in favor of converting the former immigrants’ gateway into a conference center and museum. The plans announced by the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Centennial Commission are not binding. The ultimate fate of Ellis Island’s deteriorating south end, where the conference facility would go, rests with Interior Secretary Donald P. Hodel.
