‘No Interest in Peace’

Thank you for your excellent editorial. It clearly describes the many ways in which the Reagan Administration is trying to block chances for peace in Central America.

President Reagan’s continuous efforts at many levels to block any process that might lead toward peace (earlier, the Contadora process and now, the peace plan proposed by President Oscar Arias Sanchez of Costa Rica) has created wide mistrust regarding his intentions. His perception of Nicaragua as a threat to the United States is the result of a deep-rooted anti-Communist hysteria rather than of an understanding of Central American history and its current realities.

I, like many others, am disturbed by this Administration’s insistence that the contras are a democratic and positive force in Central America when there is such overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

I agree with your position that it is now up to Congress to stop the senseless killing in our undeclared war against Nicaragua by cutting off all support to the contras--and finally giving the countries of Central America a chance to move toward peace in that region.
