Bill Madlock, Detroit’s clutch hitter during the first nine innings, helped Alan Trammell become the Tigers’ extra-inning hero Sunday.

Madlock followed ninth-inning home runs by John Grubb and Matt Nokes with his third homer of the game and added a sacrifice bunt in the 11th to set up Trammell’s game-winning single as the Tigers came back to defeat the Baltimore Orioles, 8-7, at Detroit.

Breaking out of an 0-for-21 slump, Madlock hit a two-run homer in the first inning and added a bases-empty one in the fifth. His third homer tied the game, 7-7.

“I got good pitches to hit because I was getting ahead in the count,” Madlock said. “During my slump, I’ve been getting behind 0-2 a lot, but today it was 2-1, 2-0.”

It was the first time in his career that Madlock, a four-time National League batting champion, hit three homers in a game.

The win went to Willie Hernandez (1-1), who pitched the 11th inning. The loss went to Doug Corbett (0-2).

Fred Lynn hit a three-run homer, his 12th, for the Orioles in the first inning.

Boston 6, New York 2--Al Nipper pitched a five-hitter and Jim Rice drove in two runs as the Red Sox beat the Yankees at New York.

Nipper (7-6) pitched his third complete game in his last four starts, striking out eight and walking two. Rice, who has 27 runs-batted-in in his last 32 games, knocked in runs with a single in the fourth and a double in the sixth.

In the sixth, Boston’s Don Baylor was hit by a pitch for the 244th time, breaking the major-league record set by Ron Hunt. Baylor, who was hit in the left shoulder by Yankee starter Rick Rhoden’s first pitch, has been hit 17 times this year.

The Red Sox, trailing 2-0, took a 3-2 lead in the fourth off Rhoden (9-5).

With one out and runners on first and second, Rice drove in the first run with a single. Two batters later, Dwight Evans hit a sacrifice fly and Bill Buckner hit a run-scoring single.

Boston scored three more runs in the sixth, two unearned, off Rhoden.

Kansas City 8, Seattle 3--Bo Jackson and George Brett hit home runs and Mark Gubicza pitched a five-hitter to lead the Royals over the Mariners at Kansas City.

Gubicza (6-8) recorded his third straight win.

Jackson’s 440-foot home run, his 15th, came with a man on base off reliever Roy Thomas and capped a six-run fifth inning in which the Royals took a 7-2 lead. The home run landed in the second level of the water fountain in right field.

Brett hit Thomas’ first pitch of the seventh inning for his fifth homer.

Starter Mike Moore (3-9) took the loss for Seattle.

Royals’ pitcher Bret Saberhagen, at 13-2 the winningest pitcher in the major leagues this season, scuffled briefly with Royal third base coach Jose Martinez in the club’s locker room following the game.

Saberhagen and Martinez shoved each other and shouted at each other as reporters were allowed into the clubhouse for post-game interviews. The two were quickly separated by teammates and other coaches, and neither appeared to have been hurt. The cause of the scuffle was not known.

Milwaukee 11, Toronto 5--Robin Yount and Cecil Cooper each homered and drove in three runs as the Brewers beat the Blue Jays at Milwaukee to give left-hander Teddy Higuera his first victory in more than three weeks.

Higuera (6-7) had won only once in his 12 previous starts. He gave up nine hits in seven innings, including George Bell’s 27th homer in the first. He also matched his season high of 13 strikeouts and gained his first win since June 4.

Dan Plesac finished with four strikeouts, giving Milwaukee pitchers 17 for the game.

Greg Brock also homered and drove in two runs for the Brewers.

The Brewers scored two runs in the first to tie the game, 2-2, took a 4-2 lead on Yount’s ninth homer in the second and then batted around in a four-run third that knocked out Toronto starter Dave Stieb (6-5).

Milwaukee added three runs in the seventh off reliever Mark Eichhorn on Yount’s RBI single and Cooper’s sixth homer.

Texas 6, Minnesota 3--Oddibe McDowell hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to lead the Rangers over the Twins at Arlington, Tex.

Jose Guzman (6-6) pitched 7 innings, allowing three runs and seven hits, walking one and striking out four.

Texas took a 4-2 lead in the fourth on a wild pitch, Pete O’Brien’s sacrifice fly and McDowell’s two-run homer, his sixth.
