“Memphis Soul Classics.” Various artists. Warner Special Projects. These 16 selections aren’t necessarily the biggest hits by the many great soul artists (including Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett) who passed through Memphis recording studios but the tracks blend exceptionally well into a lively, party-minded set. King Curtis kicks things off nicely with his playful “Memphis Soul Stew,” while other high points include Eddie Floyd’s sensual “Knock on Wood” and Johnnie Taylor’s urgent “Who’s Making Love.” The only drawback is that the package falls 14 minutes short of the 60-minute standard that should be the goal of CD-only retrospectives. *** 1/2
