Army experts today defused a one-ton World War II German bomb after it was unearthed at a London construction site. More than 500 families were evacuated while the work was carried out.

The bomb was discovered Monday by workers using a pile driver on a construction site in the East End of London on the south bank of the River Thames a few hundred yards from Tower Bridge.
