GM is placing 3,000 workers on indefinite layoff.

The auto maker attributed the layoffs to the elimination of the second shift at its Detroit Fleetwood-Clark Chevrolet and Cadillac assembly plant. The plant is scheduled to be permanently closed Dec. 23, a company spokesman said. The spokesman said the plant will close today for model changeover, and 5,000 hourly workers will be placed on layoff. Only 2,000 of the workers will be recalled when production resumes July 13.
