Operation PUSH Inc. faces a financial crisis, according to a recently filed audit, but leaders of the Chicago-based civil rights organization said that finances were improving and that they intended to stay in business. They also contended that PUSH, which was founded by the Rev. Jesse Jackson in 1971, had always been in debt because it worked to help the poor and that news stories about its finances were politically motivated to discredit Jackson, who is a leading contender for the Democratic presidential nomination. The audit showed PUSH with 1985 assets of $91,940 and debts of $325,082.
