The Genetics of Genesis

I enjoyed Jack Smith’s predictions (“A Crass Menagerie,” June 7) concerning patented genetically engineered animals. But his reference to genetic engineering as “God’s exclusive right” is inapt. Similar labels have been applied in earlier times to the study of astronomy and the practice of medicine. Genetically transmitted diseases and birth defects are examples of bad genetic engineering in which God may need a little help. Incidentally, Dr. Seuss need not worry too much about patent litigation. His published works should prevent anyone (even the doctor himself) from patenting the original spazzim or the umbus. Of course, someone might still try to patent an improved version of the umbus, perhaps with 98 milk faucets and the handy horns of a spazzim.
