With Johnny Carson on vacation this week, hosting duties on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” will be handled by David Steinberg on Monday, Paul Reiser on Tuesday, Patrick Duffy on Wednesday and Pat Sajak on Thursday and Friday.

Cindy Williams serves as host on “The Baby Makers,” a documentary that KHJ-TV Channel 9 plans to air July 12. The program will examine the science of fertility technology and look at the legal and moral issues posed by these new ways of “making babies.”

Laurie Anderson will be the host of “Alive From Off Center” on public television this summer. The series returns for its third season July 13. It consists of 10 new half-hour programs featuring avante garde dance, music, comedy and theater. Among those whose work will be spotlighted are comedian Eric Bogosian, choreographer Molissa Fenley, “new vaudevillian” Bill Irwin and puppeteers the Quay Brothers.

Perry King and Season Hubley are cast as police officers in “Vice Queen of the Sunset Strip,” a TV movie for CBS that is set in 1940s Los Angeles. The drama centers on the fallout of King’s arrest of a well-known madame, played by Joan Van Ark of “Knots Landing.”

Maria Shriver, who moved from CBS to NBC last fall, will be the anchor next season on “Main Street,” the network’s much-praised magazine series for young people. She replaces Bryant Gumbel. Shriver also will anchor NBC’s “Sunday Today” show when it debuts in September.

Wayne Rogers and Valerie Harper are cast as husband and wife in “Drop-Out Mother,” a film that CBS plans to broadcast next season. It’s a comedy about a successful businesswoman who decides she’d rather be a housewife, much to the consternation of her children and her husband. Kim Hunter plays Harper’s mother and Carol Kane portrays a friend.

“Matlock” will kick off its second season on NBC this fall with an episode filmed in London. The guest stars will include David McCallum, Don Murray, Michele Greene, Greg Evigan and Bruce Greenwood. The episode also will introduce two new regulars to the show: Nancy Stafford as a lawyer and Kari Lizer as a law clerk. Andy Griffith and Kene Holliday star in the legal drama.

Buck Henry will have a recurring role on CBS’ “Falcon Crest” next season. He’ll play a special-effects magician employed by Angela (Jane Wyman) in her various schemes.
