Hayden Calls Quote Incomplete

The Times quoted me in an incomplete way in its recent article (June 21) on anti-nuclear protests by city officials, making it appear that I was personally disinterested.
In fact, I told your reporter the following: “I can understand the frustration of local officials in dealing with the nuclear arms race. As a state official I am working through the legislative process (this so far was quoted accurately) on the issue of nuclear weapons work being done under the auspices of the University of California” (this latter remark was not quoted).
Local elected officials have the right to express their conscience on such matters. As long as they remain concerned about potholes, and not just bomb craters, I am sure the citizens of Santa Monica will elect them to office.
Thank you for the correction.
