Hot, dry weather continued to plague firefighters battling wildfires in several Western states that charred more than 4,000 acres, authorities said. The worst fires were in Arizona, Idaho and Utah, where three major blazes were still burning out of control. About 45 miles southwest of Winslow, Ariz., flames charred more than 2,000 acres of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest and there was no estimate of when it would be contained, authorities said. Tinder-dry conditions, temperatures in the mid-80s and winds gusting to 25 m.p.h. were hampering firefighters’ efforts, Ken Palmrose, spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service, said.
