AIDS surpassed cancer as the leading cause of death among women ages 25 to 34 in New York City last year, city officials said. Sam Friedman of the municipal Health Department said that 186 young women in the city died of acquired immune deficiency syndrome in 1986, 63 more than died from all types of cancer. Health officials reported also that a study of 1,100 female AIDS patients in the city found that 80% of them used drugs intravenously or had sex partners who injected drugs.
