Children who live near ordinary overhead power lines are twice as likely to get leukemia as children raised away from the magnetic fields the lines generate, a New York scientific panel reported. It also estimated that 10% to 15% of all childhood cancers may be caused by the fields. The project director called the finding disturbing and urged further study, but the report’s author, Dr. David Savitz, said: “There is nothing in this study that should cause anyone to do anything dramatic, like selling their home.”
