U.S. District Judge Irving Hill in Los Angeles issued a permanent injunction against L.A. Gear, a Los Angeles footwear maker, prohibiting it from making or selling its Boy’s Thrasher shoes. Finding that L.A. Gear willfully infringed two Avia patents, the judge ordered L.A. Gear to pay the plaintiff’s attorneys fees and asked a magistrate to determine the size of financial damages, which could be doubled or trebled. Elliot J. Horowitz, L.A. Gear’s chief financial officer and executive vice president, estimates the maximum cost at $400,000. He added that the company stopped making the model in question about a year ago.
