Providence High School Alive and Well

This letter is in response to an article (May 17) about Corvallis High School.

Of some concern to me were the comments which addressed the financial stability of Providence High School in Burbank. The reference to Providence as “a co-ed Catholic High School that has also faced financial trouble because of declining enrollment” implies that the demise of yet another Catholic high school is on the horizon. To set the records straight, it must be stated that few of the economic conditions contributing to the closure of Our Lady of Corvallis High School exist at Providence High School today.

Unlike the religious community which previously sponsored Corvallis High School, the Sisters of Providence have reaffirmed their commitment to secondary education in recent years. Today they demonstrate this commitment through active participation in administrative, teaching and counseling roles at Providence High School.

Your implication of financial struggle and impending closure undermines this basic commitment by casting doubt in the minds of future high school students and their parents regarding the long-term viability of Providence High School. If widely accepted, these implications might inadvertently drive enrollment figures to a level which would make long-term operations unrealistic.

Providence High School is alive and well. Its faculty, staff and community board are anxious to continue serving the needs of families in the greater Los Angeles area.
