A boom in baby doctors and a bust in babies threatens the pediatric profession with further economic hardship and even raises the possibility that some pediatricians may be out of work in years to come, health officials warned. A joint report by the American Medical Assn. and the American Academy of Pediatrics said that, while the number of pediatricians has grown by 89.3% since 1970, the number of children under 19 dropped from 77 million to about 71 million.
