ROMANCE IN THE AIR--Dinner under the stars, romantic music and delicious food--they all add up to an elegant evening. But an Evening of Summer Elegance, set for Thursday at Villa del Sol in Fullerton’s The Plaza, will also support prevention of child abuse. The event will be sponsored by Volunteers For Kids Sake, a financial support group for For Kids Sake Inc. The organization works with law enforcement and social service agencies in training professionals to handle child abuse investigations. RILEY SALUTED--Orange County Supervisor Thomas F. Riley will be honored for his volunteer efforts Thursday at a dinner sponsored by the Volunteer Center of South Orange County. Riley will receive the first “Giving Is Living” award from the Volunteer Center at the dinner, which will be held at the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel. GRIERS HONORED--A surprise celebrity will serenade Rosey and Margie Grier when they receive the National Drug Avoidance Award from the Search Foundation for their work with inner-city youths at a July 17 dinner. “An Evening with Cole Porter,” at the Irvine Hilton and Towers, will feature an auction, dinner and dancing to two orchestras. SENIORS RALLY--Residents of the Hy-Lond Convalescent Hospital in Westminster--the group of senior citizens that “adopted” the hostages of Lebanon in July, 1985, and have prayed daily for their release--have tackled another cause. The cities of Fountain Valley, Westminster, Garden Grove and Stanton have joined forces with Hy-Lond to hold a benefit for the homeless on July 26. A dinner show, featuring the Barbershop Empire Choirs, will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Garden Grove Community Center Room, 11300 Stanford St. Tickets are $12.50, with proceeds to be administered by the Shelter for the Homeless, a Westminster-based organization that provides clothing, food, shelter and support for the homeless.
