A French court ordered Klaus Barbie to make a symbolic payment of 1 franc--about 16 cents--to each of 62 individuals and Jewish and French Resistance organizations representing the victims of the former Nazi Gestapo chief of Lyon. Barbie, 73, was also ordered to pay for the costs of his two-month trial, estimated at more than 1 million francs (about $165,000). The wartime “Butcher of Lyon” was found guilty July 4 of crimes against humanity for his actions against Jews and members of the Resistance during World War II and was sentenced the same day to life in prison. Barbie was not in court for the damage-award proceedings.
