Gunmen Kill Two Rebels, Woman
White gunmen shot and killed two members of the outlawed African National Congress guerrilla group and a female companion in Swaziland, South African news agencies reported Saturday.
They said the killers’ car forced a taxi carrying Paul Dikeledi, Charles Mapunda and the woman off a road outside Mbabane, the Swazi capital, on Thursday. The reports said the two men were shot in the taxi and the woman, Augusto Tsinini, was killed as she attempted to flee.
The South African Press Assn. quoted a “usually well-informed source” in Swaziland as identifying the victims. It reported that a Swazi police spokesman said there was “little doubt that the incident was the work of foreign professionals.”
Police in the landlocked kingdom in northeastern South Africa began a search for the attackers but reported no arrests.
The Citizen, a pro-government Johannesburg newspaper, said Dikeledi supervised the ANC’s “Transvaal machinery” in Swaziland. Transvaal, which borders Swaziland to the west, is South Africa’s northern province and the site of most ANC attacks.
