The State

About 40 protesters gathered outside the exclusive Bohemian Grove retreat near Monte Rio in Sonoma County, as guests began arriving at the tightly guarded redwood preserve for the club's annual two-week encampment. One protester, anthropology professor Luis Kemnitzer, tried to hand out condoms to some of the grove's visitors as they drove through the front gates. Kemnitzer said he is skeptical about the organization's claims that the summer gathering is an escape from decision-making by the Bohemian members--who include President Reagan, Vice President George Bush and dozens of the country's more influential male political and business leaders. "They're not just talking about cribbage," Kemnitzer said.
