Without debate, the San Diego City Council on Monday unanimously voted to extend the life of the Citizens Advisory Board on Police-Community Relations until 1989.
Created in 1985, the group was scheduled to disband this summer but council members decided to extend the board’s life because its members want to monitor improvements in community relations by the San Diego Police Department.
A key issue is how the department will allow citizens to review discipline of officers. Board members have suggested that citizens be allowed to have input in both the investigation and discipline of police misconduct. The board members have also suggested imposing discipline on police officers who are often named in citizens’ complaints--even though the complaints may not have been sustained. The city manager’s office opposes that idea.
