El Toro : Money Voted to Stretch El Toro Base’s Runway
In action expected to help reduce jet noise for Irvine residents, the House voted to appropriate $14.6 million Tuesday to extend a runway at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.
The project, requested by Rep. Robert E. Badham (R-Newport Beach), was included in the House version of the military construction appropriations bill, which was approved on a 371-48 vote. The Senate has not yet voted.
The longer runway would decrease noise around the base because it would allow aircraft to fly patterns farther away from homes during aircraft carrier landing practices, Badham said. Officials with the city and the Irvine Co. have worked with Badham for three years to gain federal approval of the project.
Construction on the runway addition, which will be 2,700 feet long, could begin late this year or in early 1988.
