Selection of jurors for the perjury trial of former White House aide Michael K. Deaver continued behind closed doors over the objections of some press organizations that U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson should conduct the screening in public. Attorneys representing some reporters and broadcasters filed an emergency motion asking the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to open up the process, but the appellate court took no immediate action. Jackson said he is allowing the closed screening to protect jurors’ privacy.
