Ice Cream Combo Has Come a Long Way : Modern-Day ‘Sundae’: It’s More Luscious Than Ever

Around the 1890s, religious leaders criticized sinfully rich ice cream sodas as stimulating and banned consumption on Sundays. Soda advocates created a new “Sunday” treat by removing the fizz and adding chocolate sauce over the ice cream. The spelling was then changed to “sundae.” Some modern sundaes have become even more luscious with all the liqueurs, rich chocolate bars, fruit sauces and doubly decadent premium ice creams now being manufactured. Here are some tempting, mouth watering examples:

Brandied Fruit Sundae: fresh berries or exotic fruits steeped in brandy and served over pineapple and banana ice cream.

Orange Cointreau Sundae: Cointreau-orange truffle ice cream served in orange shells, garnished with orange segments and crushed chocolate truffles.

Pina Colada Sundae: Rum-steeped pineapple spooned over coconut ice cream or banana split with coconut ice cream.

Healthy Sundae: Fruit-flavored frozen yogurt or ice cream topped with chopped dates, honey or granola and raisins.

Ambrosia Sundae: Balls of strawberry or Neapolitan ice cream in coconut layered with tropical fruit sundae sauce (kiwi, pineapple, orange or mango).

Ginger Sundae: pineapple and ginger ice cream topped with fruit preserves and crystallized ginger.

Citrus Sorbet Sundae: Lime or lemon sorbet with hot fudge, caramel or crushed fruit topping.

Tarragon Sorbet Sundae: Tarragon flavored and assorted fruit sorbets topped with lemon curd.
