Pasadena : James Takes L.A. School Job
Bonnie R. James, assistant superintendent for administrative services for Pasadena City College, will become deputy business and finance officer of Los Angeles Unified School District for a one-year trial period beginning Aug. 3.
James, 48, was a top contender to become president of PCC during a nationwide search that ended in April when a divided Board of Trustees chose Jack Scott, president of Cypress Community College. Leaders of several black organizations protested the board’s action, saying James, a black, should have been chosen.
James, who earns $75,000 at PCC and administers a $61-million annual budget, said his new post will pay $94,000 and the Los Angeles schools’ budget is $3.7 billion. He said the one-year trial period is a courtesy given to management and certificated employees during which James will have the opportunity to return to PCC if he chooses to. James was a teacher and administrator for Los Angeles schools for 15 years before joining the PCC staff.
