Pico Rivera : Schools Pare 21 Jobs

Share

The El Rancho Unified School District board has ordered elimination of 21 classified, or non-teaching, jobs to help balance its proposed $37-million budget for fiscal 1987-88. Maria Aguirre, Pete Ramirez and Raul Salcido opposed the cuts. The action will save the district about $30,000 a year, Ramirez said.

Eight of the employees in the eliminated positions have already received “lateral” transfers to other jobs in the district, board President Beatrice Proo said, and other transfers are expected to be made.

In opposing the cuts voted on June 14, Ramirez said: “We go through this every year. All the people will end up keeping their jobs, but in the meantime they go through the anxiety of wondering, ‘Am I going to have a job come September?’ We’re talking about peanuts here. We’re picking on the nickel and dime stuff, $5, $6 an hour.”

Ramirez said that the district anticipates receiving $500,000 from the sale of six houses it owns that will help balance the budget; in addition, El Rancho has frozen all expenditures of state lottery funds.
