The Nation : Deaver Screening Opened
Jury selection for the trial of former White House aide Michael K. Deaver was thrown into disarray when an appellate court ruled that U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson has been improperly screening prospective jurors behind closed doors. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia agreed with attorneys for press organizations that a 1984 Supreme Court decision requires the questioning of potential jurors to be held in public except in extremely rare circumstances. Jackson said he will meet with attorneys this morning to determine if his three days of juror screening will have to be redone.
