Austrian President Kurt Waldheim has been invited to make a state visit to Egypt, the Egyptian foreign minister, Esmat Abdel Meguid, said at a news conference in Vienna. No date was set for the visit. Since his election as president last year, Waldheim has officially visited only the Vatican and Jordan, and has been shunned by the United States and other Western nations because of allegations that he was involved in World War II atrocities. In Tel Aviv, meanwhile, Israeli military historian Yehuda Wallach said that he would serve on an Austrian committee set up to investigate the allegations if the panel is given independence as promised.
