The World : 35 Seized at Sikh Temple
Indian paramilitary troops arrested 35 Sikhs in a raid on the Golden Temple complex, the Sikhs’ holiest shrine, following the slaying of three police officers by suspected extremists, authorities said. At least 500 troops of the Central Reserve Police Force entered guest houses and office buildings in the temple complex in Amritsar after the ambush slaying of three members of a police patrol. Sikh terrorists, campaigning for an independent nation in Punjab state, have been waging a guerrilla war since 1982. This year, 572 people have died in violence blamed on Sikh militants.
