A civil court jury in San Jose awarded $4.3 million to Osborne Computer Corp. investors, ruling that the Arthur Young & Co. accounting firm botched an audit of the computer company, which collapsed in 1983. The Santa Clara County jury award to 13 venture capitalists and private investors could total $5.7 million after interest penalties are added. The jury cleared both Arthur Young and entrepreneur Adam Osborne of fraud, but the accounting firm was hit by the malpractice verdict for failing to draw attention to the company’s growing financial troubles in late 1982.
