East Germany has unofficially eased travel restrictions on its citizens in a move to improve the climate for Communist Party leader Erich Honecker’s historic visit to West Germany in September, West German newspapers reported. They quoted East German Protestant church sources as saying that children will be allowed to visit the West with a parent for the first time, provided the other parent stays at home. Pensioners over 65 are free to travel to the West. East Germans also reportedly will be allowed to visit friends in addition to relatives in the West.
