The Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert A. K. Runcie, lamented the lack of information about Terry Waite, the Anglican envoy who disappeared six months ago while trying to negotiate freedom for Western hostages in Lebanon. Runcie, spiritual head of the Church of England, issued a statement to mark what he called the “six months of silence” since Waite, his personal envoy, vanished in Beirut last Jan. 20. No group has claimed responsibility for his disappearance. Waite’s brother, David, said the family, including the envoy’s wife and four children, are convinced that he is alive.
