The Rev. Jesse Jackson sought support for his presidential campaign Monday from former Gov. George C. Wallace and said reports that some black leaders are unhappy with him are “exaggerated.”

Jackson met the former governor, a one-time stalwart segregationist who won his last term in office with strong support from blacks, in Wallace’s Montgomery home.

“The fact is in Gov. Wallace’s last Administration, it was one of the most forward of any governor across the South in terms of the sharing of appointments with blacks and whites and women, and the tone of the Administration had changed,” Jackson said.

Wallace told Jackson: “I will consider you in every respect,” but withheld a commitment of support.
