A passenger on a Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to North Carolina heard cries for help beneath her seat in time to save a frantic baggage handler trapped in the luggage compartment.

A passenger on Delta Flight 1076 to Raleigh, N.C., told the Alabama Journal on Monday that she heard someone below the passenger area pounding and shouting for help as she sat in the plane Sunday night before it took off.

“I heard all this banging up underneath my chair,” said Paula Spivey, a passenger on the flight. “Then we heard a man’s voice yelling: ‘Help! Help!’ At one point he yelled: ‘Get me out of here!’ ”

Jackie Pate, a Delta spokeswoman, said a baggage handler apparently was locked in a front bin of the luggage compartment by other agents who did not know he was retrieving a piece of luggage.

A few minutes before the plane was to leave the gate, he was rescued from the pressurized compartment where animals are transported, Pate said.
