Tampering

Share

A letter in the July 8 Times stated, “Of all the terrors anticipated from a Reagan presidency, none was more awesome than the prospect of his tampering with the Supreme Court and by so doing, tampering with the Constitution itself.” One is tempted to mention the tampering with the Supreme Court during the Franklin D. Roosevelt Administration, but one word is sufficient to describe this whole idea: hogwash.

One of the constitutional obligations of a President is to nominate candidates for the Supreme Court when there are vacancies. This is tampering with the Supreme Court? Again, hogwash. This is tampering with the Constitution? Once again, hogwash.

The most “awesome terror” feared of a Reagan presidency was not tampering with the Supreme Court, but the terror that Reagan would push the button that would plunge the world into a nuclear war that would destroy it. Of course this has not and will not happen. But one can’t help but feel, as ridiculous as it sounds, that the leftists who expressed this terror are disappointed that it hasn’t occurred.
