A U.S. official declared this country’s strict neutrality in the upcoming elections in South Korea. Assistant Secretary of State Gaston J. Sigur also urged North and South Korea to bury the past and resume a dialogue. In remarks to the Foreign Policy Assn. in New York, Sigur said, “We lend our full support--unqualified--to the Korean people and to whichever candidate they choose to be their next president in an open and fair election.” The State Department official recently served as a high-level envoy to South Korea to urge the military government to adhere to its schedule for free elections.
