USC basketball Coach George Raveling was named an assistant coach of the 1988 U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team Tuesday by the Amateur Basketball Assn. of the USA.

John Thompson of Georgetown had earlier been named head coach of the team.

“I feel extremely proud to once again have the opportunity to represent my country in the Olympic Games,” said Raveling, who also served as an assistant to Bob Knight when the U.S. won the gold medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Raveling, 50, previously coached at Washington State for 11 years, then at Iowa for 3 years, before moving on to USC, where he’ll begin his second season this fall.
