Hawaiian Gardens : Project Architect Selected

Demolition to make room for a proposed $2 million senior citizens center and library complex at Norwalk Boulevard and 221st Street began this week.

Hawaiian Gardens is also negotiating a contract with Anaheim Hills Architects, which was chosen by the Redevelopment Agency earlier this month to design the one-acre project. Construction is expected to begin in early 1988.

The senior citizens activities center will include an arts and crafts room, exercise room and a large multipurpose room, said Theresa Dobbs, redevelopment project manager.

The public library will be moved from its present location at 12134 Tilbury Ave. to the new site, Dobbs said. The library is in a 3.6-acre commercial redevelopment project on the northwest corner of Carson Street and Norwalk Boulevard.

“We have a long way to go before the city decides on a design,” Dobbs said, adding that the city is interested in the views of everyone who will use the complex and will establish an advisory committee of three city officials, one senior citizen and a library representative.
