Aid to the Nicaraguan Contras and Covert U.S. Activities

For some strange reason I always believed that the senators and congressmen represented all the people in their districts not just those who agreed with them. For some strange reason I thought I could tell my representatives to express my views on any given subject and that I would be received with courtesy and my viewpoint duly noted. Not so however. I called Rep. Robert Dornan’s (R-Garden Grove) office to express the view that I thought that North was a disgrace to the uniform he wears and a traitor to his country. That view was not well received. On the contrary, I was subjected to such a flood of verbal abuse that I was stunned speechless and finally hung up.

I called Sen. Pete Wilson’s (R-Calif.) office to express the same view--they were much nicer, they just hung up on me.

I called Sen. Alan Cranston’s (D-Calif.) office where I was courteously received, my comments duly noted, my name and address taken and a thanks for my call. Thank you, Sen. Cranston. I don’t know what position or attitude you have toward North, but I appreciate that I was able to express mine to a representative without being rudely treated.
