Prisons in L.A. County

It is ludicrous to believe that the recently signed prison bill (July 19) is a fair one. The bill aims to give “equal pain” to Los Angeles’ heavily Democratic, Latino, low-income, over-populated, urban, Eastside and a middle-class, white, underdeveloped, Republican district west of Lancaster. One of the complaints Lancaster residents have is that the tentative prison site would destroy plans for residential development in the surrounding area.

East Los Angeles already has more than its fair share of smog, industrial pollution of just about every type imaginable, inadequate police protection and school over-crowding. It seems to me that the legislators that drew up this prison compromise should have also taken into consideration the fact that for decades the Eastside has unfairly carried the burden of having freeways crisscross its neighborhoods. I wonder how many freeways crisscross Lancaster neighborhoods?
