The Iranian Moujahedeen, the Iraq-exiled main opposition group, said it has evidence that Chief Justice Abdulkarim Moussavi Ardabili is running an opium-smuggling operation to help finance Iran’s war against Iraq. According to a Moujahedeen official in Washington, Iran netted $30 million to $40 million from drug sales in the year ending in March, 1987, and the proceeds were deposited in the bank account of a London-based firm, Kala Co. An official of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said he could not confirm the allegation but noted that roughly half the heroin consumed in the United States comes from opium poppies grown in Iran.
