Jim Kropfeld of Cincinnati and his Miss Budweiser shattered the unlimited hydroplane single-lap speed record, averaging 155.172 m.p.h. on one lap of qualifying on the Columbia River near Kennewick, Wash.

The previous record, set on the same 2.5-mile course in 1985 by Chip Hanauer of Seattle in Miller American, was 153.061 m.p.h.
